Writer and editor

CLEAR THINKING, BETTER CONNECTION

As a professional writer and editor, I am focused on finding the very best way to communicate something. This means thinking first about purpose, because effective content relies not only interesting ideas and an engaging style but also on clear intent. Over two decades of professional experience tells me this holds true for anything that relies on text, from a novel to a commercial website.

As a writer, I produce thoughtful content for websites, non-fiction books, exhibitions, reports and other forms of text-based output. Whatever the context, I work hard to identify then thread together the right information, ideas and stories to engage a particular audience. I also work as an editor, and am expert in developing other people’s text-based content. With experience on recent projects as varied as an academic book on design, new content for a museum website, an educational toolkit and a strategy plan for an environmental management company, I collaborate with both organisations and individuals to help them get really clear on what they need to say, and how best to say it.

I live and work in Norwich but my clients are also in London, elsewhere in the UK and, sometimes, further afield. I mostly work in the heritage, not-for-profit, publishing and visual arts sectors; I also take on commercial commissions. I not only write websites, develop book concepts, evaluate manuscripts and edit copy, I also create exhibition texts, write toolkits, generate content plans, think up slogans, consult on branding, etc. – I can work on pretty much any project where words need to do an excellent job of communicating something. I welcome this variety in my work as I’m confident it helps me maintain a usefully flexible and well-rounded approach to the challenge of communicating something effectively.

Whatever kind of project I take on, I am always motivated by what well-chosen words can do to help support both people and positive change. More on the two aspects of what I do: writing, editing
